First Year Poppies

First Year Poppies

First Year Poppies

Last August I sowed seed for red poppies.
Poppies are hardy perennial plants that readily start from seed. The secret to successful germination is to broadcast the seed in late summer and  just barely cover the seed with soil; tamp the soil and keep the seed plot well watered.

I’ll carefully thin and transplant the young poppies once the ground dries out.
Poppies have to be transplanted with great care because they have a very long tap-root and resent being moved.
In a couple of more years they’ll be a joy to behold in May.

Katherine Grossman

Katherine Grossman was born and raised in the greater Washington, D.C area. But for the last 30 years Mrs. Grossman has lived a life of deliberate self-reliance in rural western Pennsylvania. She loves to garden, knit mittens; makes a killer meatloaf and has been known to deliver triplet lambs with her eyes closed.
